Night Club Visuals.

Interactive/Isadora Reference: Music & Light by Bardaro Francesca and Gianni Bardaro

I always find it quite difficult to find relevant examples of Isadora when researching. Above is an example of a performance that reacts to sound and movement (an aspect of what I am hoping to acheive but in a very different way).

My Most Recent Piece of Work.

This is a piece of work I had fun with based on the idea of Actions speak louder than words. There isn’t anything serious or true about it I just wanted to draw and have fun with it as it has been a while since I have been able to do my own work.

This is another example of the style of work I do and I thought It would be a good idea to post this as aspects of my work I would like to animate are large in scale on this piece of work. I would like to animate the mouth to open and close in relation to sound and the eye to open and close with the force of movement possibly.

This is the piece that got me excited about using and starting on Isadora, I think this is such a mind blowing piece of work and the fact it was displayed in a shop front is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE!

In my piece of work for this project I am going to use motion sensors so my piece will have a similar kind of isadora interaction to this amazing piece of work.

This Project…

I am really happy that my change in idea for this project has really changed my mind about it as a whole. I am really excited to start animating and drawing and using Isadora (even though I am going to face some difficulties) on my own works and creating a really fun, imaginative, bold and colourful night club visual.

Artist Reference: Keith Haring
Keith Haring was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s. Haring achieved his first public attention with chalk drawings in the subways of New York. These were his first recognized pieces of pop art. The exhibitions were filmed by the photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. Around this time, “The Radiant baby” became his symbol. His bold lines, vivid colors, and active figures carry strong messages of life and unity.
Haring’s work is something I relate to quite a lot in my sketchbook and have done since I was about 15/16. I really love the simplicity of his works and the strong messages in which they portray, his vivid use of colour is something that makes me a fan of what he has created. Haring wasn’t afraid of colour and this really is shown in his works and even still today is work is considered as fresh and still contemporary.

What do you want to do ?

-For this project I am setting myself my own personal brief, for this brief I have opted to animate aspects of my own illustrations through flash and then apply them to isadora. When my animations are in isadora I am going to set the animated aspects of my drawing (I am yet to create) to the likes of sound and motion etc. – when people are dancing the piece of work will animate – when music is playing the piece will animate.

My work: http://www.facebook.com/pages/CalSaysHi-Illustrations/264652560238980

- you don’t have to be signed into facebook to view the images.

Why do you want to do this ?

- I feel like this is a development with my own personal work and style and I feel that it is definitely a step forward in order of pushing myself. I am really excited and enthusiastic at the prospect of being able to animate something I have and created myself and something we see as a flat but dynamic colourful visual. I draw all the time and my interests are very much drawing and listening and finding new music to listen to and I am very happy to combine these together.

What research will you need to do for this project ?

- For this project I am going to look into existing club visuals and generally examples of isadora and animation that I feel are applicable to the work I am going to make or that hold aspects of the way the piece is going to be animated. I am also going to look at illustrators and animators that inspire me and see how my style and line of work has came from that.

What factors will be important in gauging the success of this work ?

- For me and the viewers of my work, I feel that getting the animation perfect is one of the biggest factors I really want the animation to run as smoothly as I can possibly get it to as it will then be much more visually pleasing. I also feel that connecting isadora up to the animations could be a bit of a challenge but I am really excited to see it all as one big moving piece of club visuals.

Artist Reference: Martin Fischer
Martin Fischer is a freelance graphic gesigner and illustrator from Prague. Martin uses a combination of analog and digital techniques. Hand-drawn sketches, computer graphics or images from his digital camera travel through fax machines or copy machines or are produced on canvas or are screen printed. Whatever the combination of techniques and media used, he will create a unique, final piece with his characteristic line drawings and gritty montages.
After buying the ‘Concrete To Canvas: More Skateboarders Art’ book, I shown my parents it and this reference is something my Mum commented on by saying “who’s work does that remind you of Cal?” and I was like “MIINNNEE”. I always find it nice to find an artist or illustrators work in which you can semi-relate to stylistically and I think I have found another in Martin Fischer.
His use of bold black lines and very strong use of colour is something that I feel I can relate to in terms of application most definately and I feel like he is a strong reference in terms to my own working style.

My 10 Summer A1 Illustrations.

My aim for the summer (personally) was to do 10 A1 illustrations based on feelings or things people had said to me, I am really satisfied with the outcome.

I hope ya’ll like them :) x

This is an example of some of the work that I create, My personal style is very bold and colourful. I had a sit down chat with Sam and he asked me what my interests where as I was so unenthused about my initial idea and I replied ‘Music and Art/Drawing’ and he then asked to see some of work and he seemed really impressed with my work and enthused about the whole idea of animating a piece of work like the length of arrows, eyes and mouths opening and closing and other elements of my work he then asked how I felt about it and I just became so excited and enthusiastic about the whole idea. I really feel like this could prove to be quite a nice step forward in the development in my line of work and bringing an interactive nature to it really excites me.

Project Draft Proposal.

Project Title: Nightclub Visuals.

what technology, craft or processes do you wish to investigate / investigate further ?

Flash animation and Isadora.

what do you want to do ?

For this project I would really like to interactively animate aspects of my own illustrations through flash and isadora. Firstly I am going to create an illustration and then scan it into the computer and then trace and make opponents for the animation, scan them in and then use flash to try and help me make a nice smooth animation. I am then going to apply them to isadora. When my animations are in isadora I am going to set the animated aspects of my drawing to the likes of sound and motion etc. – when people are dancing the piece of work will animate – when music is playing the piece will animate.

what are the specific aims and objectives of the project ?

To create a nice smoothly running colourful night club visual that moves (animates) with the sound and movement of the club.

what research have you undertaken / will you undertake ?

For this project I am going to look into existing club visuals and generally examples of isadora and animation that I feel are applicable to the work I am going to make or that hold aspects of the way the piece is going to be animated. I am also going to look at illustrators and animators that inspire me and see how my style and line of work has came from that.

list some key reference points and artists/designers/technologists who have inspired you

Diego Giovanni Bermudez Agguire.

Martin Fischer - a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, hard to find ref online - found in a book of mine.

Keith Haring.

Creature Feature by Zoë Darnell & Stuart Lanceley

how will you make your project ? what is your plan of work ?

For me and the viewers of my work, I feel that getting the animation perfect is one of the biggest factors I really want the animation to run as smoothly as I can possibly get it to as it will then be much more visually pleasing. I also feel that connecting isadora up to the animations could be a bit of a challenge but I am really excited to see it all as one big moving piece of club visuals.

Timescale about 6 weeks.

what support might you need ?

Flash and Isadora help, I have been shown by Chris and Sam how both pieces of software would work in order for my proposed work to work but just on the day help will probably be needed.

what facilities / equipment might you need ?

A mac with Isadora and Flash softwares on it.

what difficulties do you anticipate ?

- Further technical uses of the softwares to ensure that the highest possible outcomes for my proposal can or could be made.

- Connecting the Flash animation up to the Isadora software to help make my idea viable.

Learning Outcomes

1. Show an awareness of how technology impacts on the process of developing design work for print and/or digital media. 2. Record digital and/or craft based experiments via online media.

3. Apply appropriate technical skills.

4. Develop the use of online resources.

The Self Initiated Brief…

My initial idea for this brief was to look at healthy eating but I didn’t have a clue what to do for it. I was getting really caught up in the idea of the piece having a big meaning or purpose rather than opposed to having fun and exploring the software in a fun and experimental way. I just wasn’t enthusiastic about it at all.

_____________________________

After speaking to Sam, He asked me what I was interested in and I then shown him some of my artworks and he seemed really impressed by them. We then sat down and both came up with the idea of animating a piece of work and then put the animations into Isadora and make my work interactive using the sound and motion sensors for example to make it animate and interactive.

I am really pleased and excited about this concept, a millions miles more than my original idea.
